Sister to the Wolf
This highly readable piece of historical fiction chronicles the early days of Fort Detroit. The story concerns the life of young Cecile Chesne, an independent and spirited young woman who lives with her “coureur de bois” father after her mother’s death. Prior to setting out for Fort Detroit, Cecile impulsively purchases the freedom of a young Pawnee slave, whom she has seen being cruelly abused. This incident leads to a deep bond not only between Cecile and the boy, but with her father as well.
