Twelve-year-old Matthew lives in New York City in the early 1800s. Losing his parents to a cholera epidemic, he is left to fend for himself. When he sees a notice in a paper offering room and board in exchange for work with Doctor ABC, he quickly answers the ad and gets the job. Doctor ABC is a phrenologist who teaches Matthew about his practice and takes him on a series of adventures as he attempts to finish his book on the subject.
