Felicity Pickle and her sister Frannie Jo have lived in many towns across the United States because her mother was cursed with a wandering heart, but when they arrive in Midnight Gulch, her mother’s home town, Felicity feels at home and with her friend Jonah they try to break the town’s curse and bring magic back to Midnight Gulch. Felicity has help in her task—she can see words, so when words appear in the air she knows what other people are thinking and feeling. This fantasy novel for grades 5-8 is suited for a literature circle or guided novel study and through discussions students can examine themes of love, loss, home, community, redemption, and change.
