That Squeak

Beck, C.
When Joe’s best friend dies, Joe struggles to cope with the death and decides to restore his bike. Carlos, new to the school, offers to help but Joe is wary of him until Carlos reveals that he, too, has suffered a tragic loss. Together the two bond over the bicycle and their shared grief, which helps Joe reach some closure. This exploration of grief and friendship, suitable for grades 4-7, would be suitable as a read-aloud to a class that has experienced a traumatic event to start discussion of dealing with grief and healing. It also speaks to themes of poverty, homelessness, social justice, and equality. The sensitive and emotional nature of the content may require significant support for students.
