Star-Crossed
Eighth-grade student Mattie has never sought the limelight, is not part of the popular crowd, and is perfectly happy with her friends and her books. When the eighth grade production is to be “Romeo and Juliet”, she overcomes her self-doubt and anxiety, auditions, and receives a part, but her biggest challenge is that she is developing a crush on another actor – Gemma, a girl. This award-winning novel for grades 6-8 could be used as an independent novel study or literature circle choice and deals with issues of self-conflict, self-discovery, family and friendship dynamics, being an outsider, self-identity, and sexuality. Due to its sensitive content, facilitated discussion would be helpful.
