Sticks and Stones

In this short Canadian documentary, elementary-aged children talk about their non-traditional families, e.g. same-sex parents, and how this affects them. The children discuss the impact of being teased and name-calling because of their family situations. During the video, a number of emotionally charged words that are used to describe homosexuals are defined. This resource could be useful in the intermediate grades to extend and support classroom discussions of homophobia, the nature of family, bullying and name-calling, boy/girl culture, and gender roles.
