Suite Française was written during the German occupation of France during World War II and follows the evacuation of several characters as the German soldiers occupy Paris, and illustrates what life was like for those Parisians who stayed or returned, and who were forced to host German soldiers in their homes. The chapters alternate from the point of view of a variety of characters and each story shows a different response to the situation. Suitable as an independent, class, or lit circle novel for senior students, it explores the personal and social conflicts and relationships that emerge in a time of war. The author was arrested during the War and died in Auschwitz
