Symptoms of Being Human

Riley, a gender-fluid teenager coming to terms with their gender identity, moves to a new high school and confronts transphobia and homophobia. Riley starts a blog to express their feelings, makes two new friends, and when Riley is publicly outed they become Riley’s allies and help Riley find the courage to become an advocate for others struggling with gender identity. This contemporary novel addresses the challenges that come with gender dysphoria and the sensation of gender fluidity clearly and respectfully. Suitable as a class, independent, or literature circle novel to explore issues of personal and gender identity, mental well-being, bullying, stereotyping, and discrimination.
