The novel follows Janie’s life as she experiences the disappointments of married life and struggles to find her place as a black woman in the United States during the 1930s. Eventually, she finds herself and her voice; she also finds her God, in nature. Her advice to the reader is: There are only two things we must do for ourselves – find our way to God, and find our way to live.
