Their Eyes Were Watching God

To satisfy her grandmother’s wishes, Janie marries young. The novel follows Janie’s life as she experiences the disappointments of married life and struggles to find her place as a black woman in the United States during the 1930s. Eventually, she finds herself and her voice; she also finds her God, in nature. Her advice to the reader is: There are only two things we must do for ourselves – find our way to God, and find our way to live.
