"The Thing About Luck" is narrated by twelve year old Summer, whose parents have gone to Japan for the summer. Summer and her brother are left with her Japanese-American grand-parents who are wheat harvesters, who travel from farm to farm during harvest season. The book follows Summer, her brother, Jaz, and their grandparents during part of one harvest season.
