Daniel Sugiura, a reporter for a Japanese-Canadian newspaper during World War II, is allowed to continue reporting despite the internment of the Japanese. He interacts with the “Three Pleasures” -- a mob boss, the secretary of a fisherman’s association, and a man who believes the Emperor of Japan will save them all -- and other inmates, and puts himself into dangerous situations to discover the true story of the Internment, and ends up questioning his loyalty and what loyalty means. This historical novel could be used in grade 10-12 Social Studies for WWII background, and English classrooms for literature circles and to explore the writing of historical fiction.
