The Tower of Life: How Yaffa Eliach Rebuilt Her Town in Stories and Photographs

Stiefel, C.
Yaffa Eliach and her family, Holocaust survivors, lived happily in Eishyshok, Poland, where she loved to assist her Grandma in her photography studio, until they had to flee to safely when German soldiers invaded their town. Yaffa moved to the U.S, became a professor, and was asked to contribute to the US Holocaust Memorial Museum and created her Tower of Life installation composed of 1000+ photos of Eishyshok’s residents and descendants. This compelling narrative is suitable as a read-aloud to explore the importance of preserving historical memory, the role of museums and memorials in society, and the historical context of the Holocaust and its impact on individuals and communities.
