Treaty Tales: The Handshake and The Pipe
The first book in the Treaty Tales trilogy, Neepin, a young First Nations girl, and her grandmother visit various people in her community, including the Band Chief, nurse at the health clinic, and store clerk. She learns about very basic pre-contact technologies and methods employed by the First Nations' People of Canada, including housing, hunting, and fishing. The treaty process of Canada's Indigenous People is referred to in very simple terms, and the handshake and the pipe are referred to as signs of respect and agreement when forming treaties. Useful as a read-aloud for K-3 to begin generating conversation and thinking around indigenous knowledge and rights.
