Two Roads
A story of growth and discovery, “Two Roads” is about Cal and his father, Creek Indians, who face the harsh realities of being a war veteran, Indigenous, and people of colour in the 1930s. When Cal must attend the Challagi Indian School, readers have an opportunity to learn about what happened in residential schools from his perspective and as he discovers his culture and identity alongside his classmates. Appropriate for upper-intermediate readers, this timely story may engage students and inspire discussions about the historical wrongs and complex topics broached in the novel. Suitable as a whole-class read-aloud or as a literature circle option, the book lends itself to a unit on residential schools and the treatment of Indigenous people in North America.
