Tyson's New Orange Shirt

Bell, B.; Dobbin-Turner, L.
On Orange Shirt Day, Tyson doesn’t want to wear the orange shirt his mother gives him until she tells him the story of a young girl named Phyllis, whose shiny orange shirt was taken from her when she entered a residential school. Phyllis’ story helps Tyson understand what the orange shirt represents, how at a different time he might have been one of those children, and how lucky he is to live with his family. This approachable story for grades 3-7 presents the story of residential schools in an authentic and sensitive way and could be used as a read-aloud to introduce residential schools and their impact on First Nations people. The compelling photos help soften the story. Social considerations noted.
