The Umbrella House

Nelson, C.
Seventh-graders Roxy and her best friend Scout live in New York City’s East Village in the historic Umbrella House co-op and have a YouTube channel where they document life in the East Village. When gentrification threatens their home and neighbourhood businesses, the two use their skills to try and win a youth reporting contest to save their beloved building, and community. The two also get caught up in the mystery of the Midnight Muralist! This engaging work is suitable for read-aloud, literature circles, and independent reading, and to launch discussions on urbanization, gentrification, friendship, family love, community, activism, perseverance, leadership, and media influences.
