Uncertain Soldier
Twelve-year-old Max, son of German immigrants, and seventeen-year-old Erich, a German POW working at a logging camp near Max’s hometown, both face extreme bullying and racism against Germans in World War II Alberta, and feel very alone and friendless. Following violent events fueled by prejudice, the boys are brought together and learn about themselves, each other, their own prejudices, and the judgement of the world around them. This novel, for grades 8-12, is suitable for literature circles or independent study, and deals with relatable issues for teens, including personal awareness, self-reflection, empathy, relationships, resiliency, courage, bullying, prejudice, and racism.
