Underground Railroad, The
Cora, a slave in Georgia, is desperate for a life outside of servitude, and when she learns from Caesar, a newly arrived slave, about the Underground Railroad, they escape. A young white man is murdered on the way, and when they finally arrive in South Carolina they find a utopia but also a slave catcher seeking Cora. She must make a heart-wrenching decision to flee again, hoping to find true freedom. Suitable as classroom novel or independent study in grades 11-12, it details how much one person can suffer to become truly free, and offers opportunities for research on slavery, emancipation, and the Underground Railroad. Winner of the 2017 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction.
