The Very Best Sukkah
In a small village in eastern Uganda, the Abayudaya Jewish community is preparing to celebrate the festival of Sukkot (booths or tabernacles). As they prepare and start building their sukkahs, a competition between the builders arises, but on the eve of the rabbi’s walk-by of the sukkahs, a huge rainstorm destroys a number of them. The community comes together to rebuild the sukkahs, sing, share a meal, and support each other. This engaging resource can be used as a read-aloud to foster discussion of creative thinking, working together as a team to accomplish a goal, community acceptance, kindness, togetherness, generosity, and overcoming sadness and destruction.
