Victory. Stand!: Raising My Fist for Justice

Smith, T.
This autobiographical work, by US Olympic gold medal runner and activist Tommie Smith, tells the story of a young black boy and the injustices he and people of colour encountered and how he stood up against injustice by raising his fist when atop the podium at the 1968 Olympic Games. The visually rich graphic novel, suitable for novel study, literature circles, or individual reading, deals with, can spark discussion of, difficult topics of racism, discrimination, poverty, police brutality, anti-Black violence, and the importance of speaking out against injustice despite the personal costs and challenges. Brutality and violence the characters experience is presented with clarity and sensitivity.
