War That Saved My Life, The
Set in WWII England, ten-year-old disabled Ada has never experienced the world beyond the window of the one room flat she shares with her abusive mother and little brother. When Ada and Jamie sneak out to join the children being sent to safety in the countryside, they are forced on Susan Smith, a single lady mourning the death of her closest friend, and Ada finally starts to experience life beyond that window, with its many lessons to learn and obstacles to overcome. This stylistically rich novel for grades 4-7 is suitable for read-aloud or guided instruction, and deals with the themes of war, poverty, determination, overcoming obstacles, disabilities, and family.
