Washington Black

Eleven-year-old Washington Black is a slave on the Faith cotton plantation in Barbados who is freed from the fields when his master’s brother Titch chooses him to help with his scientific experiments. When Washington is blamed for the suicide of a white man, Titch decides to help Washington and the two go on the run. After suffering many hardships, they eventually end up in Nova Scotia where Washington meets a girl and her scientist father who allow him to continue pursuing his scientific interests. This award-winning Canadian novel allows a depth of understanding on the topics of slavery and freedom and can be used for discussion of Acadia and the slave trade, and for independent novel study.
