We Are the Fire

In the land of Vasimaa, the Emperor Juhan has children stolen from their families and injected with serums that transform them into fire-wielding soldiers to defend his empire. Pran and Oksana, two of his victims, fall in love and are determined to escape from the evil empire and gain their freedom. On their dangerous mission they face betrayal, blackmail, the deaths of friends and enemies alike, and the worry that if they can return home they may not be accepted because of their frightening transformation. This engaging fantasy novel is best suited to a literature circle or independent reading for grades 10-12. Social considerations noted.
