We Are Okay
When Marin’s world falls apart, she leaves San Francisco for college in New York with only her phone, wallet, and a picture of her mother who died many years before, and without telling anyone that Gramps, who raised her, has died. At college she keeps all relationships at bay in order to keep the pain away, but as Christmas approaches Mabel, her best friend from home, is coming for a three-day visit. During those three days Marin reconnects with her friend, deals with her loneliness, loss, and grief, and learns about the power of friendship. This poignant novel for grades 8-12 can be used for lit circles, class study, or independent reading, and lends itself to a variety of learning activities.
