Before We Were Free

Anita de la Torre's family are part of the underground resistance to Trujillo, dictator of the Dominican Republic in the 1960s. As the plot to assassinate Trujillo intensifies, Anita learns more about the secrets surrounding the lives of those closest to her. This coming-of-age novel is based on the author's own life. There are curricular ties to Social Studies 11; content may be useful in a discussion about refugees, war, resistance, and gender roles.
