We Were Liars

Lockhart, E.
The wealthy, seemingly perfect Sinclair family spends every summer on their private island, but this peaceful existence is broken when something happens to Cadence during her 15th year that leaves her with amnesia and headaches. Two years later, Cadence, her cousins, and their friend Gat (the “liars”) gather on the island to help Cadence remember the incident. The novel focuses on the themes of self-acceptance, family morals and dynamics, and the consequences of one's mistakes, and can also raise discussions of wealth, social issues, trauma, and substance abuse. Suitable as a lit circle or independent reading choice for grades 9-12.
