Weird Rules to Follow

Spencer, K.
Mia and Lara are two good friends growing up together in Prince Rupert, but their lives and situations are very different. Mia starts to notice more and more how differently she is treated based on her socioeconomic status and race. She is Indigenous, and Lara is white from a middle-class family. As readers are invited to see life through each girl’s perspective, they may be inspired to reflect on the human condition and the differences and similarities between the two characters. In an intermediate classroom, students may be invited to examine and identify stereotypical roles and perspectives and complete a character study on the two main characters.
