Welcome to St. Hell: My Trans Teen Misadventure

Hancox, L.
This is a semi-autobiographical novel about Lewis, who started his life story as Lois—a young woman struggling to become a man—and travels back in time to support his younger self, urging readers to be kind to themselves and to those whose inner struggles may not always be visible. A graphic novel in the form of an illustrated memoir, this story broaches timely issues as society becomes more accepting of and embraces diverse gender identities. Senior secondary students may be encouraged to think critically about self-acceptance and acceptance of others. Teachers may choose to include this novel in a collection of SOGI resources. The story also lends itself to literature circles or independent reading with themes related to the struggles associated with growing up, identity, and self-acceptance.
