What Makes a Baby

Silverberg, C.
Bright and cheerful images spark curiosity in young children about the topic of how babies are made as young readers learn about the process with simple, age-appropriate drawings depicting non-gendered as well as multicultural families. Basic, factual information is presented about the function of the sperm, egg, and uterus in conception, in a colourful and engaging format. The story maps out the many weeks of gestation and touches on the process of giving birth, giving young early primary students opportunities to reflect on their own unique families and their own birth stories. In the classroom, “What Makes a Baby” also lends itself well to discussions about conception, birth, familial and ethnic backgrounds, and diversity.
