When Lola Visits

Sterling, M.
A young girl anxiously awaits her lola’s – grandmother’s—summer visit from the Philippines. The grandmother shares with the child the tastes, smells, and sounds of Filipino culture as she makes traditional foods and shares songs in Tagalog. In return, the granddaughter teaches her lola about summer in the U.S. including fireworks and fishing at the lake. This inviting picture book, with vivid, colourful illustrations, celebrates the love, joy, and learning between generations and is useful as a class read-aloud to explore families and culture and to encourage students to reflect on their own family memories.
