When the Trees Crackle with Cold: A Cree Calendar
The twelve moons in the Cree calendar and the activities that take place in each month are presented in this lavishly illustrated picture book. Told from the perspective of a child in Northern Saskatchewan, each month depicts the complexity of the family and community and how all members of the family, including the young child, contribute to daily life. The Cree word for each action is provided and a full-page illustration accompanies the text for each month. Suitable as a read-aloud for K-4, it provides opportunity for critical thinking as students consider monthly natural events where they live, and make connections with how they contribute to their community or care for their environment.
