Winnie's Great War

Mattick, L.; Greenhut, J.
Based on the true story of Winnie, a bear raised by humans when her mother died and adopted by Captain Harry Colebourn, a Canadian soldier heading to World War I, it recounts her adventures joining him for training, traveling over the ocean to England, and eventually living at the London Zoo while Harry is at war. Winnie eventually settles in at the zoo and as she awaits Harry, she becomes an inspiration to many, including a little boy who later writes the Winnie-the-Pooh stories. This story of Winnie is blended with a fictitious account of how she interacted with other animals and humans. Suitable as a read-aloud for grades 2-6, as a lead-up to Remembrance Day, and to prompt journal writing or art.
