Written As I Remember It
This autobiography of Elsie Paul, a member of the Sliammon First Nation, covers her background, childhood, the experience of residential schools, teachings related to being a woman, and is complimented by teachings on Sliammon language, geography, and spirituality. Most sections in the book are formatted with her teachings, a story in English, and a legend written in both Sliammon and English. Written in a conversational style, it is accessible to senior grade 10-12 students, and includes photos, maps, and a family tree that supports the text. Useful for teachers as a source of legends, to develop teacher understanding of First Nations’ traditions and issues, and as a library resource.
