Year of Borrowed Men, A

Barker, M.
Gerda and her family live on a farm in Germany during WWII and as her father and brother must fight, three French POWs are sent to help on the farm, but the men must live with the animals in the barn and the family may not befriend or assist them. Gerda’s family can’t obey the strictures and find safe ways to provide kindness and nourishment to the men. Based on a true story, the book presents a view of the war not often seen and provides opportunities to discuss compassion, kindness, dignity, respect, and unlikely friendships. Suitable as a read-aloud or as part of a larger unit on war or remembrance, the poignant and inspiring illustrations reflect a deep respect for humanity despite difficult circumstances.
