Yiddish for Pirates

Barwin, G.
Moishe, a young Jewish man accompanied by his parrot Aaron—the narrator—longs to map and explore the world and on his journey he quickly learns the dangerous ways of the sea and the harsh laws of sailors. When he encounters a young Christopher Columbus, also eager to discover the world, Moishe narrowly escapes religious persecution because of his Jewish faith, and again takes to the seas, eventually taking charge of his own crew as a pirate. This challenging, complex text is suitable as a lit circle selection in Lit 12 or comparable courses, or educators may use small portions of the text for close text analysis.
