Yossi's Goal

Schwartz, Ellen
Yossi and his family are Jewish immigrants from Russia who hope that Canada will be a place to rebuild their lives. However, the harsh realities of Montreal in 1891 dash this hope. Living on starvation wages from their jobs in the garment industry, everyone in the family works to eke out a meager living as their employers prosper. Prejudice and discrimination play against the new immigrants, while poverty and terrible working conditions cause illnesses that threaten the future of the families.
