Zoli

Colum McCann
When Zoli is 6, the state police kill her family. Although her grandfather raises her in the Slovakian Roma community, he goes against tradition and teaches her to read and write. Eventually, her people (the Roma) recognize Zoli’s talents for singing and writing and embrace her as a cultural icon. She attracts the attention of a Slovak poet and an English idealist. However, in the 1960s, as part of their efforts to assimilate the Roma, the Czech communist government seizes Zoli’s work.
