Brown Girl Dreaming

Woodson, J.
This award-winning memoir details the author’s life during the 1960s and 1970s, from being born in Ohio, to moving to South Carolina to be raised by her grandparents, and finally to being transplanted to New York by her mother. Written in verse, the story captures her life during the Civil Rights Movement, details how she found her identity through her writing and her life experiences, and follows her journey to becoming a writer. The poignant, poetic style uses descriptive language, alliterative titles, and literary devices to appeal to the reader’s senses, and details political unrest, societal racism, self-identity, and family struggles including poverty, upheaval, and religious acceptance.
