Brangwain Spurge, a snobby academic elf, is sent to the court of the rival goblin king to take a gift that might broker peace between the hostile kingdoms and at the same time spy on the goblins. His host, Wervel the archivist, is excited to welcome Brangwain, but a series of misunderstandings causes trouble that puts both Spurge and Wervel at risk and they end up becoming unlikely partners as they face danger and uncover a plot that could cause a great war between their kingdoms. This fantasy novel, for grades 6-12, combines both text and illustrated pages to tell the story and can be used as a class read-aloud, literature circle novel, or independent novel.
