Escape From Syria

Kullab, S.
Amina, an adolescent in Aleppo, Syria, has her world turned upside down when an explosion destroys her family’s home. The war causes them to flee Syria and they become asylum-seekers who experience many problems, until finally they are granted refugee status in Canada. Amina tells their story through flashbacks to life in Syria and details of their current life in Toronto. This engaging graphic novel, with expressive, realistic illustrations, deals with complex issues of war, the plight of refugees, immigration policies, hardship, resilience, and courage, and offers students an inside look at the Syrian conflict as well as the opportunity to develop their historical thinking skills. Social considerations noted.
