Orange Shirt Story, The
When six-year-old Phyllis leaves her grandparent's farm and arrives to start school at the St. Joseph’s Mission residential school near Williams Lake, she is not allowed to wear the shiny orange shirt her grandmother gave her. This Canadian memoir presents a residential school survivor’s point of view and records the origin of Orange Shirt Day. The combination of child-friendly language and colourful, vibrant illustrations reflects First Nations children's experiences in a powerful, informative, and engaging way, and can encourage critical thinking in grade 3-7 students. Social considerations noted.
